Sewing Is a Valuable Skill

Home economics courses teach sewing, and sometimes students at the time think this will be a waste of their time. The male students especially think that they will never use the skills that they learn in sewing class because their mother or their sister always sewed their buttons back on their shirts and patched up the elbows on their jackets. Later, the male student go off to college or leave the nest for some other reasons and find out that they need those sewing skills because their mother is far away. They have to get out a needle and thread and do their own sewing.

Sewing skills can be very valuable for other jobs other than sewing buttons on a shirt. There are many times when a small tear can ruin a beautiful garment unless a repair is made quickly and carefully. Sewing also comes in handy if a patch needs to be put onto a scout uniform or a trim needs to be put on a school costume. There are tailors at most dry cleaning establishments that can do sewing tasks, but if the hem on a prom dress comes down at the last minute, there is no time to get to the dry cleaners.

Sewing Can Be a Financial Windfall

Sewing can save the budget if it is used to produce some of the garments that are often bought in stores. There are some great shops with lots of fabrics at reasonable prices that can be made into dresses, shorts and prom gowns. The garments that are sewn at home will be very distinctive from those that are in the shops. A large department store will have racks and racks of garments that are very similar. A person with sewing skills can make their own clothes that are unique.

The fabric shops have great patterns with clear directions for making the latest styles. Even a novice seamstress can follow these directions to produce a beautiful garment. This same seamstress can also make curtains and draperies to redecorate the house. The same shops have great books with directions for making valances and draperies in many different styles. The fabric shops also have great patterns and ideas for making Halloween costumes or special clothes for school events. There are also directions and patterns for novelty items such as decorator pillows. A seamstress can get a great sense of accomplishment after completing a special project.
